Codec für Audio- und Videodaten von der Firma Microsoft, der Mitte der 1990er-Jahre auf den Markt kam und Teil von Windows 95/98 war. Die Farbtiefe betrug 8 oder 16 bit und war damit den Konkurrenten Indeo (Intel) und Cinepak Codec unterlegen, die mit 24 bit Farbtiefe bereits True-Color-Qualität erreichten. Heute verwenden die Produktgruppe Microsoft Media Technologies, zu der auch der Windows Media Player 8.0 gehört, den Codec »Windows Audio Video 8«, der nahezu DVD-Qualität erreicht.
